About Premises

Legislation

Premises:

The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 applies to all employers and all businesses that provide a service to the public. It requires organisations to make "reasonable" adjustments to their premises so as not to discriminate against disabled people.

Order hotline: 0800 294 4440

These "reasonable" adjustments may include the following:
Improve access to your premises. If access is only via steps, why not get a ramp to enable wheelchair access.
Install an intercom system at the door so visitors can request help.
Consider tactile surface tiles - these can help to guide the visually impaired internally or externally.
In busy or noisy environments hearing induction loops help to transmit and amplify the spoken word to a hearing aid - ideal for shops or reception desks.

The Smoking Ban in the UK requires that virtually all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces prohibit smoking, including pubs, bars, restaurants, shops, cafes and all public premises. The legislation requires companies to display relevant signage, and clearly indicate any designated smoking area.

What do I need to do?
Display "no smoking signs" in prominent areas.
Take reasonable steps to ensure that staff, customers/members and visitors are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smokefree
Ensure that no one smokes in smokefree premises or vehicles
Set up a designated smoking area for employees and visitors

You could also:
Remove ashtrays from smokefree areas
Develop a smokefree policy in consultation with staff

  • Provide your staff and customers with support to quit smoking.
Ensure that your staff and customers know where they can smoke if they choose to, ie. Use signs to direct customers to smoking shelters.
Put ash bins at entrances to avoid unsightly cigarette butts and other litter.
